Volado (Bottom Leaves)
These leaves grow at the bottom of the plant. They are light and mild. Most importantly, they help the cigar burn evenly. While they don’t add much flavor, they ensure a steady burn. Volado leaves often serve as fillers because of their excellent combustion properties.
Seco (Middle Leaves)
Seco leaves come from the middle of the plant. Additionally, they offer balanced flavors with a mild sweetness. These leaves frequently fill cigars, providing body and complexity without overpowering the blend. Seco leaves enhance the aroma and balance the stronger Ligero leaves.
Ligero (Top Leaves)
Ligero leaves grow at the top. Since they receive the most sunlight, they become thicker and stronger. These leaves add bold flavors and strength. Ligero often fills cigars to give them a strong kick. Because of their strength, they burn slower and add intensity to the cigar.
Cigar Construction: Wrapper, Binder, and Filler
A cigar consists of three parts: wrapper, binder, and filler. Each part plays a key role.
Wrapper: The outermost leaf. It’s smooth, flavorful, and adds sweetness. The wrapper often sets the cigar’s tone. For example, a Connecticut wrapper provides a mild taste, while a Maduro wrapper offers richness.
Binder: The middle layer. It holds the filler in place and maintains the cigar’s shape. Binders, made from tougher tobacco leaves, add subtle flavor while ensuring structure.
Filler: The core. Made from a blend of Volado, Seco, and Ligero, it provides the main flavor and aroma. The filler blend varies greatly, influencing the cigar’s strength, burn time, and complexity.
